The Most Versatile Item in your Closet

This is a look from last week.  The days have been a tad chillier here in San Diego, and for me, I've found the best layering piece this season to be the tuxedo style blazer.  I'm in love with the details of this blazer, the faux leather trim and satin cuffed sleeves make it a standout amongst the traditional black blazer.  Pair it with jeans and a tee and you add instant polish.  I grabbed this one from Ann Taylor last year but you can find a similar option at TopShop and it's only $30. Check it out here: Top Shop Faux Leather Blazer

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!

Insta Round Up- The Sheath Dress

Hello! Hope your week is off to a great start.  My last post was geared toward my personal style when I'm not working, but the reality is that the majority of my wardrobe contains work essentials. Having two kids, I like to keep it simple when getting dressed in the morning.  Which means you can usually find me in a sheath dress.  I feel like the cut of a sheath dress is super flattering on anyone.

I've rounded up my top three favorites that I wear on repeat.  Simple in cut but each dress has it's own uniqueness.

From top: I love the color of this Ann Taylor dress.  I swore to myself that I was going to stick to buying neutrals for work but something abut this royal blue was calling my name.  You can find it on sale here:  Ann Taylor Short Sleeve Dress

Center: This black sheath fromBanana Republic may be my favorite dress in my closet.  I love the cut of the neckline and the lace capped sleeves make the dress interesting and pretty, I could easily wear this dress to work every day.

Bottom:  Another Banana Republic fave, the big gold zipper on this dress is what sold me, again, another  simple cut with just a little extra detailing to make it a standout.  Both BR dresses are sold out but you can always find some variation in store.

This year is all about keeping things simple, I noticed that in the past couple of years I had been purchasing too many work pieces that were on trend for that moment only to realize that I sort of grew tired of them when each season would pass.  So I'm making my best effort this year to stick with what works best for my style and body type.  What's your go to work piece?  Anything you're letting go of or stocking up on?  Comment below and thanks for reading!

Best of 2015

So I'm a little late to the game with a Best of 2015 post but wanted to reflect on the year.  These were my "best nine" from Instagram, in terms of likes, which is kind of fun to see.  I started my blog in 2015 as a personal creative outlet and to sort of challenge myself to get out of a style rut I felt I was in, after having two kids.  2015 was a year of learning and cultivating new, unexpected relationships. I had no idea how much community I would find in blogging and posting to Instagram.  It really has been a unique experience connecting with local creatives in so many different lines of work, which I never would have done had I not started blogging.

My goals for this blog and the coming year are to post more consistently and to bring content that allows me to connect with more people, who may share the same interests as me.  I'm entering the new year feeling content, but also excited for the all the possibilities out there.  Cheers to 2016!

(Here's a quick roundup of my personal style from the year)

Flowy dresses and knee high boots- I'm pretty sure this combo will continue to be present in my wardrobe, it's just so easy to throw on a flowy dress and get going.  Also, flowy dresses with basic ankle strap heels, these black ones are by Ann Taylor and get so much wear.  I own this basic ankle strap in black and gray, I've learned they'll take you so far in your wardrobe.  My OTK boots were an investment piece from last year, they're Michael Kors.  I've linked a similar pair here:

On the flip side, fitted dresses in basic colors.  As I get a bit older I'm realizing I can get more wear out of a basic silhouettes and neutral colors, which hasn't always been the case for me, as I love color and prints.  this year though I think I'll be sticking more closely to neutrals in classic shapes.  This basic black fitted midi with knee highs feels casual but I bit dressed up at the same time.

Denim and more denim.  Last year was the year of denim on denim. I learned to pair my denim by playing with different colors and textures.  The denim dress also came back into style.  The one pictured is a trendy lace up dress I picked up at Forever 21.  I try not to bust the bank on items that may be in and out of style quickly.  But it's super cute and I got a lot of wear out of it during summer and fall.  This year I'll be eyeing a sleeveless denim midi dress in a looser cut.  Something along the lines of this dress from Asos: denim midi dress

You can never have too many neutral booties, right?  I purchased a neutral pair, pictured, bottom center, from Elie Tahari this year and they've quickly become a go to in my closet.  They pair so well with dresses and denim.  I purchased mine from DSW and can't seem to find them online anymore, but something similar like these Free People booties would do the trick:  Free People bootie

In terms of my closet, I just did a huge purge of clothing that no longer served a purpose.  It's been so difficult for me to let go of pieces that maybe I paid too much money for an only wore once, or pieces that carry some kind of memory.  The list goes on and on, but I've slowly been purging and it feels great.  If I purchase anything this year it will definitely be higher quality pieces that I can get a lot of wear out of.  I'd like to get more creative with the pieces I already own, it's amazing when you clear out your closet and can actually see what's in there, that you start to see how you can mix and match what's already there.

As always, thanks for reading along, I hope that your New Year is off to a great start!

Surviving the holidays with wild kids

Happy New Year friends!  I hope that the past few weeks have left you feeling rested and ready to take on the year ahead.  This post is a tad late but wanted to share my review of our stay at the Rancho Bernardo Inn during the week of Christmas.  This was our first time coming to RB Inn and I have to say, I was so pleasantly surprised.  The Inn is about a half an hour from where we live in San Diego but felt like a total get away.  We checked in for two nights with my parents and sister's family.

During our stay there were all sorts of kid's activities going on, decorating gingerbread men, Christmas carols on stage for the kids, checking out beautiful lights, a life size gingerbread house, and a movie by the pool complete with S'mores.  Needless to say, the cousins were on little sleep and probably too much sugar for two days, but you have to just roll with it, right? That's my motto anyway.
The Inn is much bigger than I expected, which is awesome with a group of wild children, lots of open space to wander, run and get lost in.  Beautiful outdoor seating every corner you turn. There's an adult pool and family pool, we spent time at the family pool which was heated and perfectly comfortable for swimming despite the cooler temps and even rain.

All in all it's truly a magical place that we will most likely visit again next year and look forward to making it a tradition.

Thanks for stopping by and cheers to the New Year!
